The LPN State Exam
If you are preparing to take the LPN state exam, read this for expectations, preparation tips and statistics.
A portion of the test will be assigned to mathematical competency. Since nurses are to administer medication dosages without error, a 75.9 percentile is required to pass. The questions in this area might include decimals, fractions, roman numerals, ratios and equations. A question that may be asked could include changing a child's weight from kilograms to pounds. Calculators are not allowed during this test and students are encouraged to take the test early in case it needs to be repeated.
Studying is the best way to prepare for the LPN state exam. Study guides are available at bookstores and online. Create a study guide to practice with and leave lots of room for notes. Purchase or create a set of flashcards with questions. Use the flashcards frequently to build speed and to learn as much information as you can. It is not a good idea to put off studying until the last minute. If you read something multiple times, your retention rate is higher and stress levels will be lower when it comes time to take the test. Make a practice test and time yourself. Put your pencil down when the time has expired and focus on your weak areas.
It is common for a student to fail the exam the first time they take it. 12% of US educated students and 51% of internationally educated students failed the state test on their first try. Taking the test again is allowed but you must better prepare yourself if you take it a second time. Now that you have taken it once, your nerves should be a bit more relaxed. You know what to expect and you have studied even more. Expect success and you will be in a better position for a passing grade. Retesting requires another application and fee.
Practice tests are available free online. These tests include self-assessments and materials are available for self-improvement. Go to www.testpreview.com to browse some of the practice tests. A database system is available at http://www.nclex-pn-tests.com/nclex/pn/index.htm for $49.95 which includes thousands of practice questions, assessment tests and categorized materials. The categories include pharmacology, pediatrics and health promotion. This system allows the user to print questions that were answered incorrectly for more specific studying.
Audio lectures are an important tool for studying and are available at http://www.hurstreview.com/.
